Theremin - Ether Music and Espionage (paperback edition)

A book full of soviet names, who wonders... Detailled information about development and history of the Theremin, plus a few excellent pictures. Foreword by Robert Moog.

Glinsky, Albert

The A-Z of Analogue Synthesisers Part I Revised
The A-Z of Analogue Synthesisers Part I Revised

The most important book about keyboards has been revised! Quite a lot of additional information, some new drawings. Sadly the coloured pictures in the middle were not replayed by other ones...

Forrest, Peter
2004
The A-Z of Analogue Synthesisers Part II Revised
The A-Z of Analogue Synthesisers Part II Revised

The second part is even more elaborate: nearly 400 pages... It's great to find new developments inside as well - e.g. Dave Smith's Evolver or the beautiful Wiard Modular System...

Zawinul - ein Leben aus Jazz
Zawinul - ein Leben aus Jazz

Wow, this is a marvellous piece of literature. Joe Zawinul was a phenomenon. Read about his musical career, his 'friendship' with Friedrich Gulda, his experiences with synthesizers (some bad printing mistakes in that chapter - e.g. it's not Aarp synthesizers !!!). Worth buying, a piece of history! [J. Zawinul died in late 2007, what a shame].

Baumann, Gunther
2002
Workshop Synthesizer
Workshop Synthesizer

A little of everything: some synth history, basic types of synthesis, how to use samples etc. Many chapters use the Reaktor synthesizer for demonstration. Nice appendix with synth glossar. Comes with CD-R including a demo-version of Reaktor... German only.

Hoenig, Uwe G.
2002
Vintage Synthesizers
Vintage Synthesizers

Second edition, updated & expanded. With beautiful appendix to the coloured picture section, and new chapters (Serge Modular Systems, Perchance a Polyfusion,...). A must-have!

Mark Vail
2000
Synthesizer
Synthesizer

Basic literature about additive synthesis and modular systems. Most chapters use the Doepfer A100 system for explanations. Goof preface. In my opinion the book itself is going a bit too deep in technical aspects rather than explaining useful musical performances. Comes with CD-R...

Anwander, Florian
2000
Nord Modular
Nord Modular

The Hammond Organ (Beauty in B)

If you're in Hammonds you must have it...

Keyfax Omnibus Edition
Keyfax Omnibus Edition

One of the best synth-books you can get. It's a shame Julian Colbeck finds no room for modular systems - in no keyfax-edition. Still he gives you a lot of information, and if he's not familiar with modular stuff, it's correct to leave it out...

Colbeck, Julian
1996
The A-Z of Analogue Synthesisers Part II
The A-Z of Analogue Synthesisers Part II

Second part of the enormous comprehensive specialist book...

Forrest, Peter
1996
Kraftwerk (german printing)
Kraftwerk (german printing)

Original title 'Kraftwerk - Man, Machine and Music' from 1993. Book about the career of the unique german band Kraftwerk. Read about projects such as 'Autobahn', 'Radio-Aktivität', 'Trans Europa Express' and others. You won't find too many words about equipment/synthesizers, nor too many pictures of them... (sadly). French author Pascal Bussy also wrote books about wine. Interesting.

Bussy, Pascal
1995
Synthesizer von Gestern (2)
Synthesizer von Gestern (2)

The second part of Matthias Becker has not the same class as the first does. But still it shows some rare instruments (OB-1, Pentaphonic, Synthacon, ARP-2500, Kobol Expander etc.) So when ever you find one... buy it!

Becker, Matthias
1995
MIDI-Analog Sequenzer
MIDI-Analog Sequenzer

I would call this "self-advertising"... Of course "the" Midi-analog-sequencer is his majesty MAQ-16/3... Well, Mr. Doepfer - thanks for the nice schematic layouts in your book...

Doepfer/Langer
1995
The Museum Of Synthesizer Technology

The A-Z of Analogue Synthesisers Part I

What ever you want to know about a certain vintage synth - look here!!!

Forrest, Peter
1994
Das Keyboard Lexikon
Das Keyboard Lexikon

Keyboard lexicon is not exactly correct. It's rather a sort of "studio" dictionary. Not all information is correct: the picture titled "PS-3100 from 1976" is a PS-3300 from 1977...

Gorges, Peter
1994
Vintage Synthesizers
Vintage Synthesizers

Mark Vail is another "milestone" in synth-writer's history. This book gives you very interesting background-info to rise and fall of Moog, Arp, Sequential, Oberheim etc. Often the pictures are too dark...

Vail, Mark
1993
Keyfax 4
Keyfax 4

The ARP-2600 won't be found here any more, but there are "brandnew" classics (at that time) listed like the JD-800 and others... A very nice upgrade to the predecessor-printings of Keyfax...

Colbeck, Julian
1993
Key Report
Key Report

Shall this be the german equivalent to Keyfax? No chance - this is just a quite ordinary collection of synth-descriptions. Not very detailled and with some really superficial information... sadly mostly pictures are too dark...

Schäfer/Wagner
1992
Jean Michel Jarre - Waiting for Cousteau
Jean Michel Jarre - Waiting for Cousteau

Calypso and more. 'Waiting for Cousteau' is not the best album of JMJ, no way. This songbook shows note for note how unspectacular the music is. Sure, you get some background information about His work, and that's nice. Good colour pictures of His majesty, thanks.

Warner Chappell Musi
1991
Roland JD-800 Manual
Roland JD-800 Manual

We HAVE TO add this user manual to the literature list. It's simply a great piece of synthesizer literature. Contains not only detailled explanations, drawings and graphics about each part of the JD-800, but also lots of background information (music theory, how to create realistic string sounds, about using effects, etc). 200 pages.

Synthesizer von Gestern (1)

Great german book. Matthias Becker had a beautiful collection those days. And most of his articles are brilliant to read. High-quality pictures by Dieter Stock.

Becker, Matthias
1990
Jean-Michel Jarre Songbook
Jean-Michel Jarre Songbook

Although it's a songbook, it IS a piece of literature. Nice to see what the bassline of Oxgéne IV exactly looks like. And, most important, there are some excellent pictures inside (e.g. JMJ sitting in front of a - totally unpatched - Moog System 55). Worth looking out for.

Basically it's the same as Keyfax 1. A few keyboards like the brandnew JX-10 were implemented. This great book is still available these days..!

Colbeck, Julian
1986
Keyfax (1)

I personally love his articles. Julian Colbeck is definitely one of the best synth-writers. Keyfax is a collection of reviews of most existing keyboards, except modular systems...

great reviews about all kinds of keyboards. Definitely one of the best synth-books available.

no modular synths inside, what a shame...
Colbeck, Julian
1986
The Complete Guide to Synthesizers, Sequencers & Drum Machines
The Complete Guide to Synthesizers, Sequencers & Drum Machines

Wow, I like this one... it's written by a MUSICIAN !!! Sure, it is NOT complete (eg. 28 keyboards in total), but Dean Friedmann still brings you those instruments closer. Not by too much technical details but his experience as musician... there are not TOO many of those around..!

Friedmann, Dean

Rolands modular-synthesis-edition. Mainly it's the nice System-100M used for expamples... Consists of four books.

valuable documentation of synth-history. A must-have for any modular freak

quite rare and therefore over-priced on the vintage-market. Not obligatory for ordinary synth enthusiasts

Introduction by Klaus Schulze... Some great adverts inside like Crumar Stratus/Trilogy, CMI Fairlight, Wave 2.0 etc...

for the synth-enthusiast: book without any groundbreaking new information considering synthesizer-technology.

Synthesizer

I'd call this the small german version of Roland's "The Synthesizer"... quite a few explanations and examples of System 100M, plus interesting adverts, e.g. from Synthesizer Studio Bonn and Yamaha (GX-1, CS-80...)

Bock, Wolfgang
1981
Das Synthesizer Handbuch

A small but very nice book! You won't find too many breandnew information inside, but some of the pictures are brilliant. Mostly Korg instruments are shown, but also the beautiful Roland System-700. View the nice Korg-picture with all PS-instruments...

Electronic musical instruments

Another book of this titel... the original book dates back to 1971, this is the fourth printing. It's a rather theoretical literature, with drawings and schematics. Mainly dealing with Organs, but certainly the Moog-babies and typical pictures of System-55 and Moogs Studio-Setup are not missing...
